Taiwan’s Neighbors Respond to China’s Significant Naval Presence

The recent developments in Sino-Taiwanese relations have once again highlighted the increasing maritime assertiveness of China, raising concerns among its neighbors, particularly Taiwan. China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has recently deployed its largest fleet of warships in decades, constituting around 277 vessels, around the island nation. The move has drawn significant attention not only from India and Southeast Asia but also from the US, Japan, and Australia, who have expressed concerns over China’s expansionist actions, affecting the stability of the entire Indo-Pacific region.

These warships, reportedly including various types of destroyers, frigates, and support vessels, highlight China’s considerable military assertiveness and signal continuing maritime disputes throughout the region while indicating Beijing’s national interests. The deployment has sparked a regional response, with Japan, the US, and Australia conducting joint military exercises to ‘ensure the security and stability’ of the Taiwan Strait.

It is interesting to note that Taiwan’s neighbors’ responses are split, with some countries establishing official diplomatic ties with Beijing and others opposing China’s extension of influence over the region. While Vietnam and the Philippines, who have ongoing territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea, have remained relatively silent, other countries are conducting joint military drills, sending a clear signal to Beijing that they are closely monitoring China’s activities.

Amidst the rising tensions and the increasing maritime assertiveness of China, several questions arise: Will this deployment escalate regional tensions or prompt China’s neighbors to counter its actions by working together to maintain regional peace and stability? How might this affect the US-China relations, as Washington continues to offer strong support to Taipei?

Only time will tell what this deployment means for the stability and security of the Indo-Pacific region, but one thing is apparent: China’s neighbors are closely watching China’s maritime actions and are prepared to respond accordingly.
