The Department of Homeland Security has released new details about a series of mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey, sparking concerns about national security and public safety. According to officials, multiple drones were spotted flying over sensitive areas in the state, including near major airports and critical infrastructure.
The first sightings were reported in early January, when residents in several towns in Bergen County reported seeing drones flying overhead. At first, authorities thought it might be a prank or a misidentified bird, but as more sightings were reported, it became clear that something more serious was going on.
“We started getting calls from multiple jurisdictions, all reporting the same thing: drones flying overhead, sometimes in formation, sometimes solo,” said Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton. “We knew we had to take it seriously.”
As the sightings continued, authorities began to investigate. They set up surveillance cameras, reviewed security footage, and even deployed drones of their own to try to intercept the mysterious aircraft. But so far, they have been unable to catch a break.
“We’ve had no luck identifying the owners or operators of the drones,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Gregory Ehrie. “We’ve checked with local hobbyists, commercial operators, and even the military, but no one seems to know anything about these drones.”
The sightings have sparked concern about national security, particularly given the proximity of the drones to sensitive areas such as Newark Liberty International Airport and the Port of New York and New Jersey. Authorities are worried that the drones could be used to gather intelligence or even carry out an attack.
“We take any potential threat to national security very seriously,” said DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “We’re working closely with local authorities to get to the bottom of this and ensure that the public is safe.”
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. In the meantime, residents are left to wonder who is behind the mysterious drones and what their intentions are.
