New York’s Court of Appeals is set to hear arguments on the legality of a controversial law allowing noncitizens to vote in city elections. The law, passed in 2021 but struck down by lower courts, could extend voting rights to over 800,000 noncitizen residents. Its constitutionality under state law now lies in the hands of the state’s highest court.
