Blazing a Trail: NASA’s Solar Probe to Reach Unprecedented Heights
NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is about to embark on a historic mission to explore the sun’s corona, flying closer to the sun than any human-made object has ever gone before. This daring feat is expected to reveal valuable information about the sun’s magnetic fields, solar winds, and the sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona.
Launched in 2018, the Parker Solar Probe has been orbiting the sun since November 2018, gradually decreasing its distance from the star with each orbit. On its seventh perihelion, the probe will reach a record-breaking distance of just 3.8 million miles (6.1 million kilometers) from the sun’s surface, beating the previous record of 27 million miles (43.4 million kilometers) set by the Helios 2 spacecraft in 1976.
This remarkable achievement is made possible by the probe’s unique heat shield, which is designed to withstand temperatures of up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit (1,000 degrees Celsius). The shield, made of carbon-carbon composite, is capable of absorbing and dissipating heat, allowing the probe’s instruments to operate at a relatively cool temperature of around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius).
The Parker Solar Probe is equipped with four instrument suites designed to study the sun’s magnetic fields, electric currents, and plasma waves. The probe’s instruments will gather data on the sun’s corona, including its temperature, density, and velocity. Scientists hope to gain a better understanding of the sun’s magnetic fields, which are responsible for solar flares and coronal mass ejections that can impact Earth’s magnetic field and disrupt communication systems.
