Health officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are facing a pressing crisis as they grapple with an unidentified illness, referred to as Disease X, which has recently emerged in several provinces. Reports indicate that the disease has led to numerous fatalities, with symptoms including high fever, severe fatigue, and gastrointestinal distress. As of October 2023, health authorities have confirmed at least 30 cases, with 10 deaths attributed to the illness, prompting fears of a potential outbreak.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has deployed a rapid response team to assist local health officials in investigating the outbreak and to implement measures aimed at controlling the spread of the disease.
