Restoring Ancient Wonders: Palmyra’s Quest for Revival

Palmyra, an ancient city in Syria, houses some of the world’s most magnificent archaeological gems. Now, as the devastating war continues to transform the city, the people of Palmyra and international experts are working together to clear away the remnants of destruction and piece together the city’s history.

When the Islamic State (ISIS) captured and occupied Palmyra in 2015, they wreaked havoc on the ancient ruins, deliberately destroying several sites, including the Temple of Bel and the iconic Arch of Triumph. However, amidst the tragic losses, there is also hope emerging as the world’s attention focuses on preserving these jewels of history.

Working together, archaeologists and local volunteers are meticulously clearing debris and uncovering parts of the ancient city that the ravages of war have somewhat spared. They began their meticulous efforts when government forces regained control of Palmyra in March 2017. Since then, a small graveyard for destroyed artifacts has begun to grow in the shadow of the Arch of Triumph.

Majestic Roman columns still stand in several locations, offering a hint of what once was. The Temple of Bel, though damaged, has been stabilized, and the ruins are slowly being repaired. In addition, efforts to restore the Arch of Triumph have started with concrete foundations installed for its reconstruction if possible.

Many experts around the world, including UNESCO, have joined the restoration project. International cooperation and the use of new technologies, such as laser scanning and 3D modeling, are aiding experts in the rejuvenation of Palmyra’s most significant historical landmarks.

Local people involved in the project, like Karim, a teacher-turned-excavator, express a deep-rooted connection with their hometown’s rich history, along with a shared sense of hope that their past can and will be preserved. For them, the restoration of Palmyra is also a token of resilience and a tribute to Syrian heritage.
