The Louvre Museum, a revered historical landmark and cultural icon, has recently unveiled extensive renovation plans that include a new exhibition space for Leonardo da Vinci’s famous masterpiece, the Mona Lisa. Slated to commence in early 2021, these comprehensive renovations promise to transform the visitor experience while highlighting many of the museum’s most celebrated works.
Situated in the heart of Paris, the Louvre remains the world’s most visited art museum, with millions of eager art enthusiasts flocking to witness its unparalleled and diverse collection. As CEO of the Louvre, Pierre Malan explained, “Our ambition with this major renovation project is to further develop and enhance the museum experience for our visitors. By dedicating valuable exhibition space to the likes of the Mona Lisa, we aim to accentuate her unparalleled cultural significance and forgo cramped bottlenecks that have long impeded an intimate appreciation of the work.”
Masterfully crafted by the renowned Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci around 1503-1519, the Mona Lisa remains an enigma. A captivating portrait of a mysterious woman with an alluring gaze and a distinctive smile, the work has beguiled generations of art aficionados. Fondly referred to as La Gioconda by the Italians and La Joconde by the French, the work continues to defy interpretation and elicit intense admiration.
The upcoming renovations will not only include a dedicated space for the woman in the green scarf but also seek to interlink exhibition corridors for minimised congestion, introduce advanced security measures, and refashion several visitor amenities. The revamped Louvre will complete its nine-year renovation plan in early 2026, unveiling a state-of-the-art museum befitting the 30th-century standards of modern art conservation and presentation.
