Congolese rebels backed by Rwanda have taken control of the key eastern city of Goma, according to a statement from the insurgent group known as M23. As a humanitarian crisis concerns the international community, thousands of Congolese civilians have fled to neighboring countries to escape the conflict.
The rebels have declared the takeover to be a swift operation to restore peace and stability in the region. Despite denials from Rwandan officials, the international community suspects their support for the rebel group. M23 accuses the Congolese government of failing to honor a 23-year-old agreement that would have addressed grievances of ethnic Tutsi in the region.
The takeover has sparked aggression, causing thousands of civilians to flee towards Rwanda and Uganda seeking a safe haven. Additionally, humanitarian organizations warn of the risk for a looming humanitarian crisis as support organizations face difficulties accessing the inhabitants in the affected areas.
The regional administration of the city remains under the control of the rebel group, causing worries for diplomatic relations and potential larger scale conflict. International efforts are underway, aiming to resolve the ongoing crisis.
In the aftermath, the M23 rebels are concentrating on consolidating their position in Goma. African countries are attempting to strengthen negotiations between the various parties involved, with a focus on achieving a lasting solution.
