Chicago saw a surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids across the city as Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, made a visit. In response to the recent increase, immigration advocates and community leaders have voiced concerns over potential human rights violations and the problematic consequences of ICE raids. The raids targeted individuals who are living in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws.
Many residents in affected communities were left feeling fearful and anxious as the Immigration enforcement agents conducted searches in various neighborhoods across the city. Community leaders have requested clearer communication from ICE about their plans, as well as possible ways for city resources to help mitigate the consequences of the heightened enforcement activities.
During Homan’s visit, he met with local law enforcement agencies to discuss cooperation on immigration enforcement efforts and emphasize the need for continued immigration raids in the city. It remains uncertain how long the Immigration enforcement activities will continue in Chicago, but the raids show a considerable uptick while Homan is in town.
