Capitol Police Arrest Suspect in Connection with Assault on Congresswoman

The United States Capitol Police (USCP) arrested a 33-year-old man on Wednesday in connection with the alleged assault of Congresswoman Nancy Mace (R-SC) last month. The suspect, identified as Patrick Chase, was taken into custody without incident and charged with assault with intent to commit bodily harm.

According to the USCP, Chase was arrested at approximately 10:30 am on Wednesday morning after an investigation into the alleged assault, which occurred on February 12, 2023. Mace, who represents South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, reported the incident to authorities, stating that she was approached by a man who made threatening statements and physically assaulted her.

The USCP launched an investigation into the incident, reviewing security footage and gathering evidence from witnesses. After identifying Chase as the suspect, authorities obtained a warrant for his arrest and took him into custody without incident.

Chase is currently being held at the D.C. Jail pending a court appearance. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Congresswoman Mace released a statement following the arrest, expressing gratitude to the USCP for their swift and thorough investigation. “I am deeply grateful to the men and women of the United States Capitol Police for their tireless efforts to keep us safe,” Mace said. “I am also thankful that no one was seriously injured during this incident.”

The incident is a sobering reminder of the risks faced by lawmakers and their staff in Washington, D.C. In recent years, there have been several incidents of violence and threats against members of Congress, highlighting the need for increased security measures to protect those who serve in public office.

The USCP continues to investigate the incident and is urging anyone with information to come forward. The agency is also reviewing security protocols to ensure the safety of lawmakers, staff, and visitors to the Capitol complex.
