A catastrophic tsunami unleashed by an undersea earthquake struck the coastal regions of Ecuador on [Date], claiming at least one life and leaving several others unaccounted for. The catastrophic wave devastation prompted Peru to shut its ports in response to the unfolding disaster.
The magnitude 7.5 earthquake, which hit off the coast of Esmeraldas, generated a tsunami that engulfed several coastal towns and cities in northern Ecuador. Waves as high as 10 feet swept through communities, tearing through houses and infrastructure. Emergency responders are working tirelessly to attend to the injured and rescue survivors.
“The waves devastated everything,” said Eduardo Andrade, an eyewitness from Muisne. “We managed to climb to the top floor of a nearby school, but I lost my wife and daughter.” Officials stated that several small villages were effectively obliterated by the storm surge. Schools and hospitals have been damaged, limiting medical assistance to the region.
As massive waves caused widespread damage, the Port of Guayaquil shut down and Peruvian officials ordered ports in the countries northwest, including Paita, Salaverry, and Callao, to shut their doors. Fishing boats were swept ashore, and shipping operations have been interrupted.
“Our job is to work hand in hand with Ecuadorian authorities to respond to this emergency,” said Peruvian Minister of Environment Rafael Glave.
Following the tragedy, international offers of assistance poured in from countries and organizations worldwide, including the United Nations and Pan American Health Organization, aiming to help Ecuador’s devastated regions recover.
